Faculty of Advanced Physicians of ATSMU was organized on February 25, 1959. Before this faculty, doctors of our republic were forced to travel outside the republic for qualification improvement and primary specialization.For the period of existence of the faculty of improvement of doctors more than 16 thousand doctors passed courses of improvement of professional skill and primary specialization. In 1993, the Institute for Postgraduate Education in the healthcare sector of the Republic of Tajikistan was established on the basis of this faculty.

In 2010, with the purpose of improvement of qualification of teaching staff of ATSMU, training and retraining of medical personnel, improving the quality of training specialists in the university structure was organized the Center for quality improvement and primary specialization under the guidance of Associate Professor Subkhonov S.S.

In 2015, on the basis of the medical department (the department of clinical residency and internship) and Center for quality improvement and primary specialization in the structure of the subdivisions of the University was organized the Center of Postgraduate Education. From 2015 to 2018, the Director of the Center was Associate Professor Kobilov K.K. Since February 2018 to the present time, the Director of the Center for Postgraduate Education is candidate of medical sciences GadoevB.Sh.

The Center of Postgraduate Education of the ATSMU implements postgraduate professional medical education programs (residency and internship) and additional education (advanced training and professional retraining) of specialists with higher medical education.

The purpose of the Center for Postgraduate Education is to organize and methodical support of educational activities of the ATSMU under the programs of training medical personnel in clinical residency internship program and additional professional education. (quality improvement and professional retraining).

The main tasks of the Center are:

• Organization, planning and coordination of the work of all departments and units of ATSMU on issues of postgraduate training of specialists;

• Organization of the educational process, selection of forms, methods and technologies of training, with the purpose of creating the necessary conditions for successful mastering by the students of educational programs of postgraduate and additional professional education.

• Interaction with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan, with medical and preventive institutions on postgraduate education issues.
