WORLD ANTI-CANCER DAY

WORLD ANTI-CANCER DAY

World Anti-Cancer Day is celebrated every year on February 4. It was on this day in 2000 that the first World Conference on Cancer Control was held in Paris, where the Charter for Cancer Control was adopted and World Cancer Day was established. The organizer is the International Union against Cancer, which unites more than 900 specialized organizations in the fight against cancer from 155 countries.

The purpose of World Cancer Day is to draw public attention to this global problem, to raise public awareness of cancer as one of the most serious diseases of modern civilization, and to draw attention to the prevention, detection and treatment of this disease.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Therefore, it is very important to detect cancer as early as possible. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), 19.3 million people worldwide will be diagnosed with cancer in 2020. The most common type of cancer in the world is breast cancer, followed by lung cancer. It is followed by colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer and stomach cancer. Cancer is a general term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body. A characteristic feature of cancer is the rapid formation of abnormal cells that grow beyond their normal limits and are able to invade other parts of the body and spread to other organs, a process called metastasis. Metastasis is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths. Studies show that 90% of malignant tumors are caused by carcinogenic substances (infectious agents, toxic substances at work, ionization, ultraviolet and electromagnetic radiation, chemical pollution of air and water), as well as peculiarities of human lifestyle (improper diet, smoking, low physical activity, etc.). Therefore, to reduce the risk of cancer, doctors advise, first of all, to give up bad habits that affect the general state of health. Also, you should not forget about external factors that contribute to the development of tumors, and actively remove them from your life or, if possible, avoid them. However, at present, cancer is not a death sentence, but a treatable disease. The main thing is timely diagnosis. According to oncologists, when cancer is detected at an early stage, the 10-year survival rate reaches more than 90%.

Today, the main role in cancer prevention is assigned to the first level of health care. In this regard, it is important to inform the population about risk factors and take individual preventive measures. To solve this problem, it is necessary to implement measures to improve the hygienic culture of the population, teach methods of self-monitoring, and draw attention to the possibility of screening. Development of early detection and screening programs is one of the priority directions of oncology development and allows to significantly improve treatment results.
