WATER FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

WATER FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

As we know water, being one of the most common substances in nature, plays an important role in the development of mankind. Of the total amount of water, 97-98% is salt water and only 2-3% is fresh water, of which 2/3 is stored in glaciers. In the current world, modern man may not realize the importance of such a resource as water. But if we think logically, the phenomenon of life is absolutely impossible without water. The uniqueness of water has been proven by scientists, and its importance we can quite feel on ourselves, because even our body consists of water for the most part, 60-70%. A human being needs water for use throughout his life: to quench thirst, to cook food, to keep his body and home clean. Our body loses large amounts of water through sweat, breathing and other excretory organs, and it is obvious that these losses must be replenished. It is necessary to follow a drinking regime throughout life, in order to avoid such unpleasant symptoms as fatigue, irritability, increased blood pressure and other indicators. Water stimulates the regeneration of tissues, improves digestion, accelerates metabolic processes and restores the functions of the immune system, all this contributes to the rapid recovery of the body.

As the world's population grows, urbanization advances and living standards rise, the demand for water in agriculture, industry and the home increases. This increased demand exacerbates the strained water supply situation, due in part to insufficient progress in improving water use efficiency and chronic underfunding of a range of systems. As a result, more than 2 billion people now face persistent and severe water scarcity.

Water resources are critical for sustainable development and the eradication of poverty and hunger. Water, energy, food security and nutrition are inextricably linked. Water is indispensable for human development and human health and well-being, and is essential for achieving social, environmental and economic goals. But inefficient and unsustainable management and exploitation practices, as well as increasing uncertainty and risks caused by climate change and other factors, are jeopardizing many water-related ecosystems.

In December 2016, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring the period 2018-2028 as the International Decade of Action "Water for Sustainable Development", which began on World Water Day, March 22, 2018 and will end on the same day in 2028. The objectives of the Decade will be increased attention to sustainable development and integrated water resources management to achieve socio-economic and environmental goals, implementation and promotion of relevant programs and projects. Tajikistan is the initiator of a number of important "water" resolutions of the UN General Assembly, two of them - on the International Decade of Action "Water for Life" 2005-2015 and on the International Year of Water Cooperation in 2013. Tajikistan is one of the leading countries in the world in terms of water resources per capita. About 60% of water resources of the whole Central Asia are formed on the territory of the country.
