THE STATE INDEPENDENCE OF TAJIKISTAN: THE MOST SIGNIFICANT NATIONAL CELEBRATION

“Independence and freedom symbolize our pride in the Motherland and patriotism. They offer the greatest opportunity for establishing an independent state, fostering creativity to promote national development, the prosperity of the homeland, peace for the people of Tajikistan, and an improved standard of living for every family. Following the declaration of independence, Tajikistan embarked on the path of building a new national statehood. Despite the challenges of civil war, we established state symbols that represent our sovereignty on the international stage and evoke pride in every citizen”.

Emomali Rahmon

Tajikistan is now an independent, democratic, and lawful state. Independence Day is traditionally observed on September 9th, marked by speeches from President Emomali Rahmon and regional leaders, highlighting the nation's achievements since gaining independence. In 2024, the country will commemorate its 33rd Independence Day.

On August 24, 1990, during the second session of the Supreme Soviet of the Tajik SSR, the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Tajik SSR was adopted, though within the context of the Soviet Union. This declaration represented the initial step toward genuine independence. On September 9, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of Tajikistan passed the Resolution and Statement on the State Independence of the Republic of Tajikistan, with Qadriddin Aslonov's signature on the historic Declaration of Independence.

The attainment of state independence by the Republic of Tajikistan marked a significant milestone in the nation's history. Each year, the Tajik people actively strive to bolster the country's economic potential, safeguard the achievements of the independence era, and promote national unity, peace, and stability. On this auspicious day, both residents and visitors across the republic eagerly anticipate traditional festivities. In the lead-up to the holiday, distinguished individuals in the fields of culture, arts, sports, politics, and other sectors are recognized in award ceremonies. The holiday itself is celebrated with nationwide gatherings, festive concerts, and, in the evening, the skies are illuminated with fireworks displays.

“All those who consider themselves patriots and hold the ideals of independence and freedom as sacred should dedicate their thoughts and efforts to preparing for each Independence Day celebration, particularly the 35th anniversary of this historic event. This should mark a new stage in fostering self-awareness, national pride, patriotism, and the beautification of our nation. I have unwavering faith in the national honor, dignity, determination, and patriotic spirit of the noble people of Tajikistan, especially its youth. I confidently affirm that through our collective and creative efforts, we will strengthen and advance our country, making our independent state more prosperous and enhancing its standing on the international stage”.

– Emomali Rahmon
