TAJIKISTAN’S FOOD SECURITY IS A STRATEGIC GOAL OF THE COUNTRY

The issue of food security is important because it shows the strategic nature of the issue of food security in the context of geopolitical processes. The state policy in the direction of agro-industrial complex development is one of the main factors in achieving sustainable food self-sufficiency. The main condition for the political priority of food security is to achieve full food security through economic and political policy. Tajikistan depends on foreign countries in two directions: in the direction of export of goods and in the direction of import of food products. Today Tajikistan exports most of its raw materials to foreign markets, which accounts for 35 percent of the country's exports. At the same time, electricity accounts for 17.9 percent of exports. In 2014, 19.1 percent of imports were consumer goods, which were imported from Russia (27.6 percent), China (16.9 percent) and Kazakhstan (15.8 percent).

Tajikistan's trade partners in the region are Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Of these two countries, the role of Kazakhstan as a major grain producer in ensuring food security is important because Tajikistan now needs grain imports. Trade between Tajikistan and Kazakhstan has a positive balance for Tajikistan, as this country is one of the largest buyers of dried grapes produced in Tajikistan (90 percent). Also, 82 percent of fresh grapes, 99 percent of apricots and 99 percent of lemons are sent from Tajikistan to Kazakhstan. Therefore, the political security of Kazakhstan is very important for our country. In the near future, Tajikistan needs to enter promising markets such as the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Japan, the United States, Germany, Russia and other countries to ensure food security.

In 2020, the structure of Tajikistan's exports allowed foreign currency to enter the country in the necessary amount to purchase grain from Kazakhstan. During this period, Tajikistan increased its foreign exchange reserves through trade in the following commodities: gold, silver and precious metals - 58% of exports, ore - 9.5%, aluminum - 9.1%, cotton - 8%, electricity - 4.1%, other products - 6.2%.

The geographical location of the Republic of Tajikistan directly reflects its geopolitical interests, as through the strategy of multilateral cooperation in its foreign policy the Republic of Tajikistan considers the protection of the country's interests in the direction of achieving independence and food security the main task for the long term. Protection of the country's food security, i.e. efficient use of water and land, innovative technologies, increasing crop yields, expanding the introduction of reseeding and, consequently, increasing agricultural production is our most important and priority task in the current situation.
