Specialist: « Pneumonia can be treated»

While the whole world is suffering from an increase in the number of people infected with coronavirus, there are many rumors about an increase in the number of pneumonia cases in Tajikistan. We spoke with Hakima Akhmedova, chief phthisiatrician at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Population of the Republic of Tajikistan, to find out more about the disease and measures to prevent it. Regarding this disease and its symptoms, he said, among other things: Pneumonia (or pneumonia of the lungs) is one of the diseases associated with acute respiratory infection that eventually leads to lung damage.

The lungs are made up of small sacs, alveoli, which in a healthy person fill with air when breathing and exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide in them. When one part of the lungs is damaged, it becomes difficult to breathe.
This disease is exacerbated at all times of the year, but most often in the fall, winter, spring, but with timely treatment, a person recovers.

Symptoms of the disease are fever, dry cough, which later turns into sputum, headache, chest pain. There are many causes of the disease, first of all heat and cold of the body cause the emergence of germs that cause this disease. It should be said that these germs are present in the body, but when the ratio of heat and cold is broken, a group of them will flourish and cause the appearance of all sorts of diseases. Including a lot of nervousness, carelessness at the time of contracting the flu, causes these germs to become ill. To what extent a person gets sick depends on the operation of the left and right parts of the lungs, on the overall condition of the person. If both parts of the lungs are affected, the disease is considered serious. In other cases, it also affects people with diabetes, kidney disease and heart disease.

- Which sinuses are more affected?

- People of all sinuses can get it if the sanitary rules are not followed. We have children getting sick. Cooling the body and drinking cold water can also cause this disease. This condition occurs more often in adults. For this reason, we experts always emphasize that people should protect themselves and their children from body temperature. Bathing in hot and cold water in the summer is equally dangerous for both children and adults.

- Now there are reports that in Tajikistan the number of patients and deaths from this disease has increased, how substantiated are these reports?

- Pneumonia is not a new disease for human society. For example, in the Russian Federation, 654,000 people died from this disease in 2019. In Tajikistan, according to the Ministry of Health, 1,031 people died of pneumonia last year.

It is true that ignorance of any disease, including the causes of pneumonia, makes people careless, so in conversations and meetings we always talk about ways to prevent it, as well as measures to avoid contracting this disease.
