PREVENTION OF MALARIA

PREVENTION OF MALARIA

Malaria is currently endemic in 90 countries, half of which are in Africa. In the former USSR, there are centers in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. Most European countries report imported cases of malaria. In Africa, most imported cases from foreign countries are dominated by tropical malaria.

Currently, tropical malaria remains one of the most pressing problems worldwide. More than 2 billion (41%) of the world's population is at risk of malaria, and malaria cases continue to be reported in more than one hundred countries and regions. Each year, 300-500 million people are infected with this dangerous tropical disease and 1.5-2.7 million people die each year, 98% of which are caused by tropical malaria.

In recent years, as a result of external and internal migration of the population of the Republic of Tajikistan, tropical malaria has been frequently registered. In this regard, we have set ourselves the goal of a deeper study of malaria in the conditions of Tajikistan, since the literature does not pay much attention to this disease. Taking this into account, we consider it necessary to outline some issues of malaria prevention.

Identification of sources of infection remains one of the decisive measures in the control and prevention of this disease. Individual chemoprophylaxis is used to protect people traveling to areas unfavorable for this infection:

- Chloroquine. Adults - 300 mg once a week. Chloroquine should be taken 2 weeks before entering a malaria-prone area and then continued for 4-6 weeks after leaving the area. Children, 5 mg/kg/week; use as adults (not to exceed 300 mg).

- Mefloquine. Adults - 250 mg once weekly. Mefloquine should be continued for 1 week before arrival in an area with known malaria and for 4 weeks after arrival. Children weighing 15-19 kg - 1/4 tablet; 20-30 kg - 1/2 tablet; 31-45 kg - 3/4 tablet; over 45 kg - 1 tablet. They are consumed as adults.

- In case of complications due to mefloquine or chloroquine: children over 8 years old, adults - doxycycline 100 mg 1 time / day. Administration of the drug is started 1-2 days before arrival in the area with malaria.
