NUTRITION CHARACTERIZATION OF FOOD INTAKE IN THE ELDERLY

The nutritional needs of the human body change with age. The main reason is the slowing down of metabolism, decreased physical activity, age-related changes in the intestines and stomach, as well as the risk of various diseases.

For this purpose, experts in the field of food hygiene offer a few basic rules for food consumption in older ages:

1. Reducing calories:

- The energy requirements of the human body decrease with age, so it is important to reduce the intake of caloric foods to avoid excess body weight.

2. Increase protein intake:

- Protein is important for maintaining good muscular performance of the human body and bodily functions.

- Good sources of protein are: lean meat, fish, eggs, legumes and dairy products.

3- Limiting fat intake:

- In old age, a person should limit the intake of high fat foods, high fat foods can increase cholesterol levels and risk of heart disease.

- Preference should be given to foods that are a source of fat: olives, nuts, almonds, avocados and oily fish.

4. Increase fiber (fiber) intake:

- Fiber helps digestion, lowers cholesterol and the risk of some cancers.

- Good sources of fiber include vegetables, fruits, and whole grain products.

5. Limiting table salt intake:

- Consuming too much table salt can lead to high blood pressure, stroke and other health problems. It is recommended to consume no more than 5g of salt per day.

6. Regular food intake:

- In old age, it is important to consume food regularly i.e. 4-5 times a day and in small doses. This helps to maintain the body's energy level and prevents overconsumption of food.

7. Adequate drinking water and fluid intake:

- The feeling of thirst decreases with age, so it is important to drink enough water even if you are not thirsty. It is recommended that you drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day.

8. Taking vitamins and minerals as recommended by your family doctor:

- With age, the absorption of some vitamins and minerals decreases. In these cases, it is recommended to take multivitamins.

Elderly people suffering from hypertension should limit salt intake, eat foods rich in potassium and control blood pressure.

It should be remembered that proper nutrition in old age plays an important role in preserving health and longevity.
