NOVEMBER 12 IS WORLD DAY AGAINST PNEUMONIA
World Pneumonia Day is observed annually on November 12, aiming to raise awareness about pneumonia and its prevention strategies. Despite significant advancements in medical science, pneumonia remains a leading cause of mortality, claiming millions of lives globally.
Pneumonia is a respiratory condition characterized by inflammation of lung tissue, typically of infectious origin. The disease can be caused by various pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Key agents include:
- Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), the most frequent bacterial cause of pneumonia.
- Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), the second leading cause of bacterial pneumonia in children.
- Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the most prevalent viral agent causing pneumonia.
Understanding the causative agents and preventive measures is essential in reducing the burden of this life-threatening condition.
Pneumonia may manifest as an independent disease or as a secondary complication arising from infectious and non-infectious conditions, including coronavirus infection or heart failure. It constitutes approximately 80% of influenza-related complications in adults.
High-risk groups for pneumonia include the elderly, children under the age of five, individuals with chronic cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, diabetes, immunodeficiencies, and those with unhealthy lifestyle habits.
Symptoms commonly associated with pneumonia include persistent cough, elevated body temperature, respiratory difficulty, chills, excessive sweating, and a marked decline in overall health. If these symptoms arise, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly rather than attempting self-treatment.
Nonspecific preventive measures include:
· practicing regular hand hygiene with soap and water or using antiseptics,
· wearing masks in public spaces,
· maintaining appropriate social distancing,
· consuming a balanced and nutritious diet,
· adhering to healthy lifestyle practices,
· routinely ventilating and cleaning living spaces.
Prioritize your health and well-being!
