The rapid melting of glaciers, as well as increasing water consumption due to population growth and economic development, threaten the lives and well-being of hundreds of millions of people.

We are honored that on December 14, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly at its 77th session unanimously adopted Resolution 2025, the International Year for the Protection of Glaciers. This resolution is considered one of the rare resolutions in that it contains both the declaration of an International Day and an International Year. The next step of the Founder of peace and national unity - the Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon was adopted with the support of 153 UN member states.

According to this resolution, firstly, 2025 was declared the International Year of Glacier Protection.

Secondly, beginning in 2025, March 21 will be celebrated annually as World Glacier Day.

Also, according to this resolution, the United Nations, under the coordination of the Secretary-General of this Organization, establishes a special trust fund, that is, an international special trust fund for the protection of glaciers.

Fourth, in 2025, Dushanbe will host a high-level international conference on the protection of glaciers.

The world community is well aware that further reduction and destruction of drinking water sources on the planet may expose people to many vital, social and economic disasters.

The adoption of this Resolution, that is, Tajikistan's fifth initiative, is evidence of a further increase in the prestige of our country on the world stage. In the words of our beloved leader Emomali Rahmon: "The adoption of this resolution is an important and historic step on a global scale, through which the international community will have the opportunity to take the necessary joint measures to protect the largest sources of drinking water. "It is expected that on the basis of this major international measure, an international trust fund for the protection of glaciers will be established within the UN. The Republic of Tajikistan, along with putting forward important initiatives on the issue of climate change, also contributes to the prevention of the negative effects of climate change in practice.
