INDEPENDENCE DAY OF TAJIKISTAN
The Independence Day of the Republic of Tajikistan is the main national holiday of the Republic of Tajikistan, celebrated annually on September 9th.
On September 9, 1991, during a session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Declaration of State Independence of the Republic of Tajikistan and the resolution 'On the Proclamation of State Independence of the Republic of Tajikistan' were adopted. Thus, the sovereign state of Tajikistan emerged on the political map of the world.
Traditionally, the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, congratulates all citizens of the republic and, in his ceremonial speech, presents an annual summary of the country's development. On this day, the president receives congratulations from the heads of CIS member states and awards people from various fields with honorary medals and titles. September 9 is a public holiday and a non-working day in Tajikistan. “Independence and freedom are, for us, a true symbol of pride for our homeland and patriotism, the greatest opportunity for sovereign statehood and nation-building, a source of inspiration for creative efforts to ensure the country's development, the prosperity of the Motherland, a peaceful life for the people of Tajikistan, and the improvement of every family’s standard of living in the country”, the head of state emphasized.
Across the country, various socio-political events take place. The capital city, Dushanbe, becomes the center of official celebrations on this day. During milestone anniversaries, a military parade is held in the central Dusti Square, followed by a ceremonial civilian procession of workers, students, and schoolchildren along Rudaki Avenue. In the evening, a mandatory large-scale theatrical performance dedicated to the formation of Tajik statehood takes place, concluding with a festive fireworks display.
In all other cities and districts of Tajikistan, residents celebrate Independence Day with large gatherings in parks and recreation areas. Music plays everywhere, creative groups perform with the participation of popular local artists, and concerts and theatrical performances are organized. Entry to all events on this day is usually free.
On the holiday, residents of Tajikistan dress beautifully and festively, often attending celebrations with their entire families. This main national holiday is celebrated not only within the republic but also around the world wherever Tajik people live.
