Global prevalence of obesity among women

Global prevalence of obesity among women

The health status of women is of increasing interest. There is a steady increase in the number of obese women of childbearing age. According to WHO, in 2016, 40% of the female population was overweight (BMI) and another 15% of women were obese.

The spread of overweight and obesity is a pressing problem for Tajikistan as well. Tajikistan has adopted the "Program of obesity prevention and formation of healthy nutrition for 2019-2024". According to the data of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Republic of Tajikistan, which was released in October 2019, 17% of the population of Tajikistan are overweight and 11.3% suffer from obesity. The Tajikistan Medico-Demographic Survey (TDS) for 2017, showed that 37% of women and girls aged 15 to 40 in Tajikistan are overweight or obese. According to the study, overweight increases with age. Thus, two thirds of women aged 40-49 are overweight or obese.

Obesity adversely affects the function of various organs and systems of the body, creating prerequisites for the development of extragenital diseases and reduced resistance to infections, increasing the risk of pathological course of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period in women. Obese women who give birth by caesarean section have a higher risk of complications such as surgical wound infection, postoperative endometritis, bleeding, etc. Maternal obesity also negatively affects the fetus, increasing the risk of perinatal morbidity and neonatal mortality. Excess weight leads to complications of pregnancy and childbirth, increases the risk of cesarean section, as well as the development of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes, congenital anomalies. Maternal obesity significantly increases the risk of increasing the child's body weight. An increasing number of children are born with a high birth weight (more than 4500 g), which contributes to the development of obesity in their future.

The number of overweight and obese women continues to increase every year. A thorough study of the epidemiology of obesity indicates the advisability of conducting further research, which will prevent the risk of cardiovascular diseases and other diseases among women, reduce maternal mortality, avoid complicated births, and improve the quality of life of overweight women.
