GLACIER MELTING AND ITS IMPACT ON TAJIKISTAN

Yes, it's very important to keep the scientists around us constant. Because the last decade was considered one of the hottest periods in the history of global weather forecasting. And such changes came after rapid industrialization. Climate change is being recorded in all corners of the Earth. In particular, the rise in air temperature does not go unaffected to humans and is damaging socio-economic, political and environmental processes around the world. In terms of human health effects, global warming may lead to an increase in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. It is predicted that from 2030 to 2050, climate change will increase the number of deaths by about 250,000 per year. According to Tajikistan's meteorological media, our country's air temperature has risen by up to 10°C over the last century.

In its annual report "On environmental threats", the International Institute for Economics and World identified 27 countries that are considered unfavorable regions in terms of environmental and climatic risks, and Tajikistan was included in this list. Our country ranks first among Central Asian countries in terms of water resources. Up to 500 cubic kilometers of water are accumulated in glaciers and snows of Tajikistan. Almost 60% of Central Asian waters originate from glaciers and snow reserves of Tajikistan. In the 90s of the last century the number of glaciers in Tajikistan amounted to more than 14 thousand. Over the last 30 years, one thousand of them have been completely destroyed. By 2050, this figure may drop by a third, which threatens flash floods from bursting ice lakes. The Fedchenko glacier, considered the largest in the world outside the polar regions, has lost more than two cubic kilometers of ice over the past few years, and its total area was 700 km2.

Melting of glaciers in Tajikistan will lead to irreversible climate changes in Central Asia, desertification, agricultural crisis, decline of entire regions due to water shortage, complete destruction of the Aral Sea and may lead to a huge crisis due to water and food shortages due to reduced harvests. The number of victims of natural disasters in our country annually reaches 500 thousand people. Lilia Burunchuk, the World Bank's Regional Director for Central Asia, writes in her blog that Tajikistan's annual economic losses due to floods and earthquakes amount to 400 million dollars. In total, Central Asian countries lose 10 billion dollars annually to natural disasters.

The Founder of peace and national unity - Leader of the nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan His excellency Emomali Rahmon, noted this issue during his speech at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change: "This summer alone, hundreds of millions of dollars worth of material damage was caused to the population and economy of the country due to water-related disasters. Unfortunately, these events have resulted in numerous human casualties."

Melting glaciers can reduce drinking water resources. Cotton, the country's most important cash crop, as well as other agricultural staples such as fruits and vegetables, are water-intensive crops, so agriculture in Tajikistan is heavily dependent on irrigation.
