MEETING OF THE STUDENT SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY AT THE DEPARTMENT OF PROPAEDEUTICS OF CHILDREN’S DISEASES

On October 28, 2025, the department of propaedeutics of children’s diseases at the SEI “ATSMU” held a regular meeting of the student scientific society on the topic: “Rickets in children” under the guidance of associate professor, c.m.s. G.A. Rakhmanova, and H.A. Boboeva. A member of the society, I. Rakhmonkulov, the 3rd year student of 2nd group of the pediatric faculty, prepared a presentation on this topic.

Rickets is a childhood disease characterized by disturbances in phosphorus-calcium metabolism, significant disorders of bone formation, and impaired functions of major organs and systems. The direct cause of rickets is vitamin D deficiency. This disease is most commonly observed in children during the first two years of life. According to the modern concept of its etiopathogenesis, rickets is classified into hypocalcemic, phosphopenic, and forms without changes in calcium and phosphorus concentrations.

The leading cause of rickets is vitamin D deficiency, influenced by both antenatal and postnatal factors. Clinical courses of rickets can be acute, subacute, or recurrent. Treatment depends on the severity of the disease, and the therapy primarily consists of specific and nonspecific treatment, which includes ultraviolet irradiation (UV therapy) and vitamin D supplementation, adjusted according to the period and severity of the disease.

Nonspecific treatment includes:

  • Breastfeeding or adapted formulas
  • Early introduction of corrective foods, cottage cheese, and complementary foods (mainly vegetables)
  • Correction of calcium and trace element deficiencies (magnesium, zinc)
  • Adequate protein and vitamins A, C, B
  • Regular outdoor activity in the morning
  • Routine water procedures, therapeutic exercises, and massage

Significant attention is given to both specific and nonspecific prevention of rickets in children. At the end of the presentation, questions were asked and actively discussed by all members of the scientific society.
